Expert Answers To Common Questions:
Q: What services do home care agencies offer?
A: Home care agencies provide medical and personal support services in the home. This can include skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, medication management, and help with daily activities (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and eating.
Q: What are the ADLs?
A: ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) are basic everyday tasks used to determine how much assistance a person may need from a caregiver.
-
Toileting and toilet hygiene
-
Bathing and grooming (Body and hair)
-
Dressing and undressing
-
Preparing and eating Meals
-
Moving safely around the home
-
Transferring form one place to another (such as bed to chair or wheelchair)
Q: How do I know if home health care isn’t enough for my loved one?
A: Home health care may not be enough if your loved one needs constant supervision, cannot safely complete most daily activities (ADLs), or requires 24/7 medical care. In these cases, a higher level of care, such as a nursing facility, may be recommended by a doctor.
Q: What happens if I don’t like the caregiver I’m assigned?
A: If you are not comfortable with your caregiver, you can contact the agency to request a different one. Most agencies will work with you to find a better match to ensure you feel safe and supported.
Q: What happens if my caregiver is sick or goes on vacation?
A: If your caregiver is provided through an agency, a substitute caregiver will typically be arranged to ensure your care continues without interruption. If you hire a caregiver independently, you may need to arrange backup care on your own.
Q: How do I know exactly what the caregiver is willing to do for me?
A: Your agency should provide a written care plan that clearly outlines the caregiver’s responsibilities. This includes the tasks they will perform, any medical support or equipment involved, and the level of daily assistance you can expect.
You should also receive a patient's bill of rights, which explains the responsibilities and rights of you, your caregiver, and the agency.
